Overview

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and BBL (BroadBand™ Light) are both light therapy treatments used to address many skin aging concerns, including pigmented lesions, fine lines, sun damage, red blood vessels, rough skin texture and acne scarring.

Laser and light therapy skin treatments have changed the scope of the cosmetic world. A series of IPL or BBL light therapy treatments can address aging concerns that popular injectable treatments cannot.

Wrinkles aren’t the only signs of skin aging

As we mature our skin begins to show damage not only through fine lines and the loss of collagen but also through pigmentation, red blood vessels, collagen loss and dark spots. These signs of aging appear over time and can be accelerated due to sun exposure and other environmental factors. Luckily, we can easily treat these concerns with a series of IPL or BBL light therapy treatments and can assist you with extending your results with a tailored at-home skin care regimen.

ThreeForMe™ laser treatment
ThreeForMe™ laser treatment combines the power of IPL light therapy and non-ablative fractionated laser technology, using the MaxG IPL and Icon™ 1540nm laser on the Icon™ platform, to target pigmentation while also boosting collagen production, smoothing texture and fine lines and improving overall skin quality.

ThreeForMe™ treatments are performed by our licensed providers under the direction of Joel Schlessinger, MD and Daniel Schlessinger, MD.

The first step of the ThreeForMe™ treatment utilizes the MaxG IPL (intense pulsed light) energy to penetrate the layers of skin without causing damage to the skin’s surface (non-ablative). The next two steps use different Icon™ 1540nm treatment handpieces to deliver focused light, creating microscopic wounds. Each pass is designed to promote healing, stimulate collagen and elastin production and cellular turnover.

The result is improved fine lines, minimized pigmentation and an overall smoother complexion and skin quality.

The ThreeForMe™ treatment can be used alongside BOTOX®, other wrinkle relaxers and dermal fillers, along with other cosmetic procedures to enhance your results.

“The ThreeForMe™ treatment is a powerful tool to address pigmentation, wrinkles, and overall luminosity of the skin. Many of my patients are loving this!”
– Joel Schlessinger, MD

I couldn’t be happier with my IPL treatment. Having had the procedure before, I know what to expect as far as the healing process. I am already seeing great progress. And I can’t wait to see the final results.

Q&A with Dr. Schlessinger

Your commonly asked questions answered.

The Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments and BroadBand Light (BBL) are innovative technologies that help to remove age spots, discoloration, and uneven skin pigment with the use of light energy.

Both are gentle, non-ablative treatments that use broad-spectrum light to treat sun damage and pigmentation concerns, such as dark spots, red lesions and broken capillaries. The unique capabilities of these innovative laser treatments can help improve the targeted area of the skin while leaving the surrounding tissue unaffected. There is a very low risk of side effects and minimal downtime, making these treatments an attractive solution for patients who live active lifestyles and are always on the go.

A series of IPL and BBL treatments can help address a myriad of skin problems that are brought about by the early signs of aging, sun damage, and other types of environmental factors. It can effectively treat:

  • Pigmented lesions
  • Dullness
  • Fines lines
  • Sun damage and dark spots
  • Birthmarks
  • Blood vessels
  • Acne scarring
  • Red lesions
  • Rough, uneven skin

These treatments can also provide several other benefits, including:

  • They are safe and effective for most skin types
  • Promote collagen and elastin production
  • Offer continued improvement in your skin’s appearance over time
  • Easily maintained with additional sessions and at-home skin care

IPL and BBL treatments, along with other popular laser treatments for the face and neck, are recommended to be done from late fall and early spring when sun exposure is limited. It’s difficult to avoid sun exposure in the summer months so it’s not recommend to have these treatment during that time.

Most individuals in their late 20s or older will see the most benefits from IPL and BBL skin renewal treatments. Not only are the treatments correcting skin damage but they can also be preventative.

Individuals who have active skin infections, or open sores on the face, are not ideal candidates for these treatments. Options for those individuals can be discussed with Dr. Schlessinger and our other providers. We would adjust the treatment plan to get those concerns under control before moving forward with the IPL or BBL treatments.

In today’s market, choosing the right physician and treatment is important for optimal results. We will work with you to prep your skin so that you can become a good candidate for the IPL and BBL treatments available at Schlessinger MD. Our providers pride ourselves on offering safe, conscientious treatment options while setting realistic expectations with our patients.

Treatment sessions are quick and comfortable, and the technologies we use have built-in comfort features for an added benefit. This means discomfort is minimal and you can easily return to normal activities quickly.

Post treatment you can expect some minor redness and swelling which will usually reside within 3 – 7 days. Follow your provider’s post care instructions which we’ll cover during your consultation and on the day of your treatment.
Results are achieved over time and often, depending upon the severity of the skin concerns, multiple treatments are required to achieve your desired outcome. We recommend waiting 4 – 6 weeks between treatments but this can vary on a case by case basis.

After you receive an IPL treatment, it is very important to begin a skin care regimen that will help keep your skin free from dark spots and skin damage. Sunscreen is imperative as it helps protect your skin from harmful UV rays. We recommend and prescribe a form of Retin-A called Obagi Tretinoin which is available in various strengths and formulations (gel or cream) along with an advanced skin care system called Obagi Nu-Derm – also a prescription – which can help to extend your results and maintain a clear complexion and even skin tone. Over-the-counter retinol products can also be used.

As opposed to more invasive treatments such as Fraxel® laser, IPL and BBL light therapy are gentle and non-invasive, meaning there is very little downtime. Swelling, redness and sensitivity may be experienced post treatment and are expected to improve within 3 – 7 days. Limited sun exposure is required and the use of SPF after the healing process is highly recommended to maintain your results. We’ll provide you with our recommendations on a post-treatment skin care routine, as well.

The cost of your IPL or BBL light therapy treatment(s) depends upon on a few factors, including the severity of the skin damage that we’re trying to correct. The overall price may also be impacted by the total number of sessions you need to achieve your desired outcome.

“IPL treatments are an exceptional way to rejuvenate sun damage. In conjunction with sunscreen and other treatments, this can be a huge assist in achieving a more youthful look.”
