Chemical peels are typically performed in med spas or dermatologists’ offices and work by dissolving the bonds that hold together the top layer of skin (the epidermis). This process, better known as exfoliation, reveals fresher, younger skin and minimizes mild signs of aging, uneven tone, rough texture and acne.

She adds, “Peels can do so many different things for the skin, including stimulating cell renewal, boosting collagen and strengthening the skin barrier, which in turn, helps to smooth skin texture and minimize fine lines and wrinkles. It’s always best to do them in a series of 4 to 6 peels for your best results, and make sure to discuss your at-home skin care regimen with your aesthetician – what you use at home is just as important as what we do in the treatment room!”

Differences between professional chemical peels vs. a chemical peel at home

Historically, at-home chemical peels have relied on lower concentrations of exfoliating acids, offering a gentler, more superficial treatment compared to the higher-strength peels available in medical spas. While using mild at-home peels from reputable skin care brands is typically safe, trying a professional-strength chemical peel at home can be very dangerous. The FDA has recently advised against purchasing products to perform chemical peels at home, in particular, those that use certain acids in very high concentrations.

Dr. Daniel Schlessinger adds, “It can be risky to perform a professional-strength chemical peel at home. Without proper training, the solution may be too strong for your skin type, or it can be left on too long, which can cause severe chemical burns, pain, swelling, skin color changes and even scarring. For these reasons, professional chemical peels should always be performed by trained medical aestheticians under the supervision of a board-certified dermatologist.”

Additionally, there are instances in which chemical peels may not be appropriate or safe for you at all. Dr. Joel Schlessinger says, “If you have psoriasis, current or recent Accutane use, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, a chemical peel would not be a good recommendation for you.”

As with any spa treatment, the chemical peel cost can vary from state to state and depends on the type of peel. Here, we’ll help you transition your skin care regimen for the season ahead with expert tips, treatments and products from our team of licensed clinical aestheticians from the LovelySkin Spa.

Focus on diminishing discoloration

As fall approaches, you may notice more skin pigmentation changes such as dark spots, discoloration or an uneven skin tone. Luckily, fall is the perfect time to start addressing these pigmentation concerns and give your complexion a fresh start.

Increased sun exposure, chlorinated pools, salty ocean water and excessive heat can leave skin dry, dull and prone to damage. Luckily, our team of Omaha licensed clinical aestheticians at LovelySkin Spa has compiled their top tips from sunscreen to combating oily skin and more.

Amanda M., LovelySkin Spa C.M.E. and Licensed Clinical Aesthetician, explains, “The summer months bring a variety of skin stressors including heat, sun exposure and water exposure. These stressors can leave skin’s natural microbiome unbalanced and in need of extra hydration and replenishment.”

She adds, “While wearing a daily sunscreen is a must, there are a few extra steps you can take to keep your skin healthy in summer.”

Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day

When it comes to protecting your skin from sun damage, sunscreen is your first line of defense. No matter where you live or the weather, it’s important to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day.

Jenna H., LovelySkin Spa C.M.E. and Licensed Clinical Aesthetician, explains, “Sun exposure is the primary cause of skin aging and damage, making SPF the most crucial step in any skin care routine. While sunscreen should be worn year-round, it’s especially important to be diligent about sunscreen during the summer when you spend more time outdoors. Look for sunscreens that are SPF thirty or higher, reef-safe and broad-spectrum to protect against both UVA and UVB rays.”

She adds, “Reapplying sunscreen is essential. I recommend reapplying every thirty to sixty minutes, especially if you’re sweating or in the water. A pro tip from our dermatologists is to use a half dollar-sized amount for the face and neck, and enough sunscreen to fill a shot glass for the rest of the body. In addition to reapplying, it’s important to physically protect your skin with hats, UPF clothing and sunglasses.”

While it may be tempting to achieve a ‘base tan’ to avoid more severe sunburns, this theory is actually a myth—and a harmful one at that!

Amanda M., LovelySkin Spa C.M.E. and Licensed Clinical Aesthetician, explains, “Getting a base tan does not protect you from sunburns. While a tan increases the melanin in your skin, it will do more harm than good. Always skip the base tan and instead, use an SPF of at least thirty on the body when outside, reapplying every thirty to sixty minutes.”

Protect skin from chlorine and salt water

Splashing in the surf or taking a dip in the pool is a great way to cool off, whether on vacation or just relaxing this summer. However, chlorine from pool water and salty ocean water can have a negative impact on skin and hair.

Chlorine kills bacteria and germs in swimming pools but it changes the water’s pH levels. These altered pH levels can strip the natural oils from skin and hair, resulting in dryness, itchiness, irritation and damage. Sensitive skin types may be more prone to rashes and hair may be more susceptible to breakage and split ends.

Similarly, salty ocean water has both positive and negative effects on skin, depending on the duration and frequency of exposure. While salt water contains nutrients and minerals that can be clarifying and rejuvenating for hair and skin in short bursts, its high pH can leave skin dry and hair brittle with repeated exposure.

So, what can you do to offset the damage from chlorine and salt water? Our team recommends taking the following steps before and after your next swim:

Shower before you swim: Rinse skin and hair before entering the water to reduce chlorine and salt absorption.
Apply a barrier cream and hair serum: After showering, apply a moisturizing barrier cream to skin and a nourishing hair serum or oil to protect skin and hair.
Consider wearing a swim cap: Wet your hair before putting on a swim cap to create a tight seal and prevent over-exposure to chlorine and salt water.

Dermaplaning: Professional vs At-Home

Exfoliation is an important part of any skin care routine. Dermaplaning is an exfoliation treatment that removes the top layer of the skin, whisking away dead skin cells, vellus hair and skin-dulling debris while maximizing the efficacy of moisturizers and skin care products.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger, a board-certified dermatologist, Mohs surgeon and cosmetic surgeon, explains, “Dermaplaning is an effective procedure for minimizing uneven skin tone and removing unwanted hair on the face. It leaves skin smoother and more even after a single treatment.”

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a minimally invasive skin care procedure that gently shaves away the top layers of the skin, clearing away dead skin cells and removing vellus hair for a brighter, more even-looking complexion. Dermaplaning is often used to reduce the appearance of acne scars, diminish the look of wrinkles and fine lines and improve skin tone.

During a dermaplaning treatment, a handheld scalpel skims off vellus hair and the outermost layer of the skin. Following dermaplaning, your skin may be red and slightly tender for a few days. The results of dermaplaning are noticeable immediately after treatment. For many patients, dermaplaning delivers smoother, brighter, youthful-looking skin.

We recommend professional dermaplaning performed by a licensed clinical aesthetician, or dermatologist, at a professional clinic to avoid the risk of infection or injury. There are at-home devices and razor-like tools that can be used to remove vellus hair from the face and body, however they do not achieve the same level of exfoliation as professional dermaplaning.

Professional dermaplaning

During a professional dermaplaning treatment, a licensed clinical aesthetician will assess your skin and review your health history to ensure you are a suitable candidate for the treatment. Your skin is cleansed and prepped for the service which, in general, takes about 30 minutes. Your aesthetician will discuss your skin goals and outline a detailed treatment plan that compliments your at-home skin care regime. They may suggest combining dermaplaning with another treatment, such as a glycolic acid peel or facial, to maximize your results. You will be given aftercare instructions and information on what to expect following your dermaplaning treatment.

Professional dermaplaning can be done once every 2 – 4 weeks depending upon your hair growth cycles.

At-home dermaplaning

There are plenty of safe dermaplaning tools, like the DERMAFLASH LUXE+ Anti-Aging Exfoliation Device, available that allow you to try dermaplaning at home. At-home dermaplaning devices often come with detailed instructions and tutorials on how to use the device to achieve the best results. Whether or not you’re using a device or razor, always start with clean, dry skin and do not go over any facial area more than once. Be sure to avoid eyebrows, eyelids, hairline and lips. Once finished, apply a gentle hydrating serums or moisturizer.

It’s important to note that at-home dermaplaning devices are designed to remove vellus hair and can be used to maintain results, or spot treat, in between professional dermaplaning services. There is also a greater risk of injury or infection when performing this service at home.

It’s important to have this service performed by a licensed professional who is trained to use specific tools and techniques to avoid damaging the skin barrier.

Q: What do you recommend for the skin post dermaplaning and why?

A: There are a few treatments that complement dermaplaning very well! I like to pair DiamondGlow with dermaplaning for clients with a drier, dehydrated skin type, as this offers additional exfoliation with skin-specific serum infusion. For those with pigmentation, scarring or fine lines and wrinkles, I like to pair dermaplaning with a chemical peel. This is a wonderful treatment to address those concerns with no downtime.

Q: What skin care can you use and what should you avoid at home in the days following a dermaplaning treatment?

A: As far as your home care regimen after a dermaplaning treatment, stick with a soothing, gentle cleanser, replenishing moisturizer and sunscreen. Your skin may be a little more sensitive after dermaplaning, especially if you are on the drier side, so extra hydration is always a good idea. If you use a vitamin C serum in the morning, it may tingle a bit when you apply it the morning after your treatment, but it will be fine to use. After 72 hours, you can start using your topical exfoliants, like retinoids or active topicals for acne.

Q: Is dermaplaning best as a stand-alone treatment or paired with another service?

A: Dermaplaning can be done on its own or paired with a facial or an AquaGold Fine Touch micro-infusion treatment. We recommend bundling dermaplaning with other services and using it as the first step to help prep the skin. When dead skin cells and vellus hair are removed, the products used are able to penetrate more easily and effectively.
