What is a HALO® laser treatment?

HALO® is the world’s first hybrid fractional laser skin treatment. It combines both non-ablative and ablative wavelengths to improve skin concerns on the face, neck, chest and other areas of the body. Board-certified dermatologist, cosmetic surgeon and Mohs surgeon Dr. Daniel Schlessinger breaks it down for us, “HALO®’s non-ablative part targets more surface level concerns like dark spots, enlarged pores and uneven texture, while ablative wavelengths, penetrate deeper into the dermis where they stimulate collagen, tighten skin and smooth fine lines and wrinkles.”

What happens during a HALO® laser treatment?

During this time, you can ask any questions you may have about the treatment process and expectations of results. From there, we can discuss other aspects of HALO® laser, including cost, what your personalized treatment plan might look like and post-treatment instructions.

If it’s decided that the HALO® laser is right for you, the next step is your treatment! At Schlessinger MD, we will work with you to schedule your HALO® laser treatment (typically within a few days following your consultation), so you can begin your journey to younger-looking, glowing skin right away. You will likely have some prescriptions to fill prior to the procedure in order to accelerate your recovery time and comfort level.

Once in the treatment room, our cosmetic coordinators will answer any remaining questions you might have and prep your skin for the laser. At Schlessinger MD, we apply a high-grade topical anesthetic for up to one hour prior to the laser and use a unique cooling technology during the laser to make you comfortable.

The HALO® laser treatment lasts anywhere from one to two hours after numbing, depending on the area treated. During this time, our dermatologists will pass the HALO® handpiece over the treatment area one fraction of skin at a time. Your skin will feel warm, and you may feel an occasional prickling sensation.

Immediately after treatment, our providers will apply a recovery cream or ALASTIN Skincare Regenerating Skin Nectar with TriHex Technology which uses a blend of proprietary peptides to help support the generation of new collagen and elastin. It also contains arnica and a phytonutrient called phytoene to minimize recovery time and calm post-treatment redness.

What is HALO® laser recovery like?

Each HALO® laser recovery experience will vary, depending on the depth of treatment, but generally, recovery is minimal compared to ablative laser treatments of the past. Immediately after treatment, your skin will feel warm, and you may experience tightness, swelling and redness, similar to a sunburn.

In the following days, you can cleanse your skin with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, (we will recommend one, based on your skin type) and apply moisturizer, avoiding letting the skin dry out. Additionally, push pause on using any exfoliating active ingredients, like alpha hydroxy acids, retinoids or anything with fragrance until you get approval from your dermatologist.

Dr. Daniel Schlessinger says it’s important to be very gentle with your skin during the healing period, adding, “You have to think of your lasered skin as being like the skin of a newborn: very fragile and sensitive to the elements. As your skin heals, it may ooze a bit, swell and eventually develop crusts as it naturally exfoliates and sloughs away. It’s important to resist picking or pulling at crusting skin, as it can lead to scarring or damage. If you have itchy hot spots, you can apply FixMySkin 1% Hydrocortisone Healing Body Balm as needed up to four times daily.”

Dr. Joel Schlessinger adds that protecting your skin is also key to achieving the best possible results, “Your skin is more vulnerable to sunburn and sun damage post-laser treatment. Avoiding intentional direct sun exposure for a week or two afterward is helpful, but many patients who live in sunny climates are unable to avoid this and do well. If you are in the sun, always wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen, seek shade and cover up with clothing or a hat.”

Finally, avoid any pools, lakes and oceans that might contain bacteria or contaminants that can lead to infections in your lasered skin for a few days after the procedure. Once your skin heals, you can resume swimming. This usually occurs within a few days or so, but lakes or ponds are dirtier and should be avoided for up to a few weeks after the procedure.

How many HALO laser treatments will I need to experience results?

With HALO® laser, many patients may see visible results in just two to five days after your first treatment depending on the intensity, with continued improvement as your skin heals. Dr. Joel Schlessinger elaborates, “Many patients see an immediate tightening of the skin and experience the famous HALO® glow in the days after treatment once the skin has healed a bit.”

While you will experience visible improvement with just one HALO® laser session, most patients see their best results with a couple of treatments. Dr. Daniel Schlessinger says, “We recommend one to three treatments each year to maintain great results and experience continued improvement.”

Chemical peels are typically performed in med spas or dermatologists’ offices and work by dissolving the bonds that hold together the top layer of skin (the epidermis). This process, better known as exfoliation, reveals fresher, younger skin and minimizes mild signs of aging, uneven tone, rough texture and acne.

Differences between professional chemical peels vs. a chemical peel at home

Historically, at-home chemical peels have relied on lower concentrations of exfoliating acids, offering a gentler, more superficial treatment compared to the higher-strength peels available in medical spas. While using mild at-home peels from reputable skin care brands is typically safe, trying a professional-strength chemical peel at home can be very dangerous. The FDA has recently advised against purchasing products to perform chemical peels at home, in particular, those that use certain acids in very high concentrations.

Dr. Daniel Schlessinger adds, “It can be risky to perform a professional-strength chemical peel at home. Without proper training, the solution may be too strong for your skin type, or it can be left on too long, which can cause severe chemical burns, pain, swelling, skin color changes and even scarring. For these reasons, professional chemical peels should always be performed by trained medical aestheticians under the supervision of a board-certified dermatologist.”

Additionally, there are instances in which chemical peels may not be appropriate or safe for you at all. Dr. Joel Schlessinger says, “If you have psoriasis, current or recent Accutane use, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, a chemical peel would not be a good recommendation for you.”

Chemical peel cost

As with any spa treatment, the chemical peel cost can vary from state to state and depends on the type of peel. The laws vary slightly from state to state when it comes to who can inject BOTOX® or dermal fillers, but generally, doctors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and even dentists can legally inject. Board-certified dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons have completed years of training and injected hundreds or even thousands of patients during that time.”

Unlike spa treatments like facials or peels, BOTOX® and dermal filler injections are akin to medical procedures. While they can do wonders for re-claiming a youthful look, they should always be injected with the utmost expertise, as they can have detrimental side effects if injected improperly.

In an unskilled provider’s hands, BOTOX® injections can have uneven or “frozen-looking” results or have more serious side effects like drooping or damage to facial nerves. Dysport® also covers areas like the upper forehead very nicely, so if a patient has tried another neurotoxin and it didn’t get the complete forehead relaxed, I might suggest Dysport®.”

“Hair loss is a widespread condition that can be temporary or permanent and shows up in various forms. What is non-scarring alopecia?

Non-scarring alopecia is the most common form of hair loss, which is good news because this type of hair loss can be reversed in some cases. This is because the hair follicle remains intact, making it possible for hair to regrow. Non-scarring alopecia ranges from hair thinning to total hair loss and is caused by genetics, hormone levels, stress, infections and more.

Here are a few types of non-scarring alopecia:

Androgenetic alopecia

Also known as male or female pattern hair loss, androgenetic alopecia is hair loss due to increased androgen hormones, which are essential in both men and women. Alopecia areata is a byproduct of when your body’s immune system mistakes healthy tissue for harmful tissue and attacks it, causing patchy or total loss of hair on the scalp (alopecia totalis) or the body (alopecia universalis). It can also show visible effects on the nails! Medications known as JAK inhibitors like Olumiant®, which was studied at Schlessinger MD, as well as corticosteroids and prescriptions like minoxidil are often used to treat alopecia areata. Counseling may be helpful if stress is a big contributor to your hair loss.

What is scarring alopecia?

Scarring alopecia is less common and occurs when hair follicles are permanently destroyed and replaced with scar tissue. Dr. Joel Schlessinger elaborates, “The main causes of scarring alopecia include inflammatory or auto-immune disorders, as well as burns to the skin, severe infections, tumors and other conditions.”

While there is no cure for scarring alopecia, if hair loss treatments are begun early you may be able to slow this type of hair loss. To diagnose this type of hair loss and determine the best treatment options for you, a scalp biopsy may be needed.

While there are many types of scarring alopecia, here are two of the most common:

Lichen planopilaris

Lichen planopilaris (LPP) is hair loss that occurs as a side effect of auto-immune responses which leads to scarring. This type of hair loss primarily affects adult women between the ages of forty and sixty, often occurring in patches and can include redness, pain, scaly skin and itchiness of the scalp.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia

Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is a form of LPP that involves hair loss in the front hairline and eyebrows. This type of scarring alopecia most commonly occurs in post-menopausal women and like LPP, may involve redness or scaling around the hair follicle as well as itching and burning sensations in your scalp.

While the exact causes of FFA are still being debated, Dr. Daniel Schlessinger has recently contributed to new research on the condition. One of his recently published studies shines light on a possible connection between FFA and the use of everyday hair care products.

Dr. Schlessinger elaborates, “Researchers have long wondered whether a form of hair loss called frontal fibrosing alopecia was due to allergic contact dermatitis, which also causes itchiness and redness in the skin. I was part of a research team that looked into this and found that many of these patients may be allergic to an ingredient called cetrimonium bromide, which is used in conditioners for its anti-frizz benefits.”

Treating alopecia and other hair loss

Identifying the underlying causes of hair loss in both men and women can be tricky. A variety of factors contribute to the condition and in some cases, the causes are simply unknown. Board-certified dermatologist, Mohs surgeon and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Joel Schlessinger elaborates, “Getting to the root of the problem is essential to identify which hair loss treatment will ultimately work best for you. While it is not always possible to find a cause of hair loss, at Schlessinger MD, we take a multi-faceted, thorough approach when developing any hair loss treatment regimen.”

The first thing to know is that if you’re dealing with hair loss, you’re not alone: it’s one of the most common medical concerns in America. To learn more about this condition as well as treatment options at Schlessinger MD, read below as we discuss:

What causes hair loss?

It’s normal for humans to lose between fifty and a hundred and fifty hair strands a day, but if you experience a noticeable amount in your hairbrush, your shower drain, or your pillow, you may be experiencing a form of alopecia, which is the general medical term for hair loss. Understanding the different types of hair loss and the causes of each can be anything but simple. Board-certified dermatologist as well as Mohs and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Daniel Schlessinger elaborates, “Hair loss isn’t just one condition but rather a variety of different conditions. Hair loss may be caused by genetics, environmental exposures, autoimmune diseases, hormonal changes, trauma, stress, viral illnesses, diet or things we simply don’t know.”

Here are a few common types of hair loss:

Androgenetic alopecia – This type of hair loss is the most common. It is usually inherited and is related to an increase in androgen hormones found in both men and women. With this type of hair loss, men typically notice a receding hairline or thinning at the top of the head, while women typically notice thinning or hair loss over the crown or temples of the scalp. A board-certified dermatologist can generically help this via certain procedures and medications, but time will almost always continue to progress the hair loss.

Telogen effluvium – This type of hair loss involves excessive hair shedding due to stress or a traumatic change to the body from illnesses like COVID-19, dramatic weight loss after taking medications like Ozempic or other GLP-1 medications, serious infections, surgeries, major stressors (e.g., car accident or death in the family), or postpartum hormonal changes. Hair will thin with this type of hair loss, but it’s rare for discrete, large bald spots to form. Dr. Joel Schlessinger adds, “In the years following the pandemic, we saw many patients dealing with COVID-19-related hair loss. As opposed to postpartum-related telogen effluvium, COVID-19 hair loss tends to appear quicker and last longer, especially if there have been multiple episodes of COVID infection.”

Alopecia areata – Associated with autoimmune disease and genetics, this type of alopecia causes patchy hair loss on the scalp and, in some cases, the face or body. While the triggers are multi-factorial and not fully understood, it is auto-immune at its core, causing your body’s immune system to mistake your healthy tissue for harmful tissue and attack it. Sometimes, patients with alopecia areata can see its effects on their nails or lose all the hair on the scalp ( alopecia totalis) or all the hair on their body (alopecia universalis). With proper treatment from a board-certified dermatologist, this type of hair loss can often be reversed or improved.

Frontal Fibrosing alopecia (FFA) – This increasingly common form of hair loss is a type of alopecia affecting the frontal hairline and eyebrows in which scar formation destroys the hair follicle. Unlike the three prior forms of hair loss, this is a scarring alopecia, meaning that the hair follicles are permanently destroyed. A recent article published by Dr. Daniel Schlessinger showed that this type of alopecia may be linked to an allergic sensitivity to cetrimonium bromide, an anti-frizz chemical found in many hair conditioners.

Traction alopecia – Chronic, repetitive tension on hair strands from tight hairstyles is the cause behind this common type of scarring hair loss. Tight ponytails, buns, braids, hair extensions and pigtails can all contribute to this type of alopecia.

Hair loss treatments for hair growth

The sooner you can get to the bottom of the cause(s) of your hair loss, the quicker you can take steps to improve it. To save time and money on treatments that may or may not be helpful in treating your type of hair loss, your first step should be scheduling a visit with a board-certified dermatologist. Drs. Joel and Daniel Schlessinger or one of our board-certified physician assistants will gather an in-depth medical history in conjunction with an examination and tailored lab work to learn more about your hair loss. From here, a treatment regimen will be curated for you and may include a combination of different types of oral medication, at-home supplements, hair care regimens and in-office treatments.

A hair loss treatment may include:

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) – Platelet-rich plasma treatment involves utilizing the regenerative capabilities of growth factors found in your blood, increasing their concentration and then injecting them into the areas of hair loss. During this treatment, we ensure patient comfort with topical numbing options or Pro-Nox. For best results, we typically recommend three treatments be spaced two to six months apart. Maintenance treatments are recommended every six months to a year.

Clinical trials – The clinical research department at Schlessinger MD researches the most cutting-edge treatments for many skin and hair conditions, including hair loss. We have done several clinical trials on hair loss in the past and currently, and if you qualify, you may be able to participate and try some of the latest advancements in hair loss medications and treatments. Notably, our researchers were involved in clinical trials for Olumiant®, the first FDA-approved, once-daily pill for adults with severe alopecia areata.

Topical prescriptions – We may prescribe a medication like minoxidil, which is FDA-approved for androgenetic alopecia. Although it isn’t fully understood, minoxidil is thought to work by shortening the telogen (resting) phase of hair growth, extending the growth (anagen) phase, increasing follicle size and stimulating blood flow in the scalp. Minoxidil is typically a long-term or life-long treatment that needs to be applied daily to maintain results.

At-home treatments – There are several over-the-counter supplements, devices and other treatments that are helpful for hair loss patients. We often recommend board-certified dermatologist-developed ReTress hair care products to improve hair density and nourish hair follicles.

Top tips to prevent and treat summer skin problems

Summer is when we spend more time outdoors and enjoy hiking, camping, swimming and family barbecues. However, increased time in the sun and more exposure to poison ivy, chlorinated water and various insects can wreak havoc on our skin, resulting in itchy (or even painful) rashes, bites and burns.

Fortunately, with a little vigilance and a few treatment tips, these skin problems don’t have to derail your summer plans. Our board-certified dermatologists are here to teach you how to prevent and treat common issues like:

Sunburn
Melasma
Poison ivy and mosquito bites
Heat rash and chlorine rash

Sunburn

Sun exposure is your skin’s #1 adversary and, if left unprotected, can result in changes to the skin from freckling and discoloration to sunburns and the more serious, skin cancer. Dr. Joel Schlessinger, board-certified dermatologist, Mohs surgeon and cosmetic surgeon says, “Spending time in the sun during summer is inevitable and wearing and reapplying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30-50 every single day (not just on hot, sunny days), is your best defense against sunburns and other kinds of damage. I recommend at least a half-dollar amount of sunscreen for the face and neck and a shot glass full for the rest of the body.”

You can pair your high-quality sunscreen with additional sun protection measures, like choosing a chair under an umbrella at the pool or beach or seeking shade at family barbecues. If you regularly spend time at ball games or other outdoor events with no shade available, using a pop-up tent or camping chair with a sunshade will go a long way to prevent sunburn. Avoiding the sun in its peak hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., getting into the habit of wearing a hat every time you go out in the sun and choosing UPF clothing and swimwear with long sleeves will also help. Dr. Daniel Schlessinger, board-certified dermatologist as well as Mohs surgeon and cosmetic surgeon, adds, “For years, many people believed the myth that getting a little bit of a suntan (a “base tan”) was one of the best ways to prevent sunburn. That’s simply not true, and the facts are that any tan damages the skin’s DNA and is potentially harmful. Alternatively, one of the best ways to help your daily sunscreen prevent sunburn is to take a dietary pill called HELIOCARE Ultra Antioxidant Supplements, which uses a technology called Fernblock to protect against sun-related skin damage.”

If you do happen to get a sunburn, you should immediately take an NSAID like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or aspirin (not Tylenol) as this will reduce inflammation in the skin and can decrease the chances the burn will be severe. You can soothe it with an ice pack and aloe vera gel and apply FixMySkin 1% Hydrocortisone Healing Body Balm, a melt-free balm treatment that will help calm inflammation and heal skin. If you experience a severe sunburn or suspect sun poisoning, you may need to be seen in the emergency room if symptoms become severe or if you fear dehydration.

Melasma

Even if you don’t experience a sunburn, unprotected sun exposure can still damage the skin, and it happens much quicker than you’d expect. Dr. Joel Schlessinger elaborates, “The aging effects of the sun occur over time but the damage occurs quickly, taking just five to ten minutes of unprotected exposure to damage skin. Sun damage is also cumulative, so while it may take a while to present in the skin, it will eventually happen.”

UV exposure is responsible for 80% of sun damage like skin aging, including wrinkles and pigmentation such as melasma and dark spots. It can also happen anywhere, anytime—even when you are indoors—as UV rays can penetrate windows in your office, home or car. Thus, as with sunburn, your best anti-aging tool is wearing and reapplying a broad-spectrum sunscreen every single day. For preventing melasma, a tinted sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide is a great choice as melasma has been shown also to be triggered by visible light, which is blue light emitted from devices like smartphones and laptop screens.

When it comes to melasma, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, but if you do deal with this type of discoloration, there are treatment options to try, including the prescription-only Obagi Nu-Derm System with 4% hydroquinone (available at Schlessinger MD or via telemedicine appointments with Dr. Joel Schlessinger) or over-the-counter Cyspera Pigment Correction System, which uses a novel ingredient called cysteamine to minimize brown patches and dark spots. The key to these topical treatments is consistency and patience as melasma treatments take some time to work.

Poison ivy and mosquito bites

Poisonous plants like poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac and swarms of biting insects, like mosquitos, can wreck a perfectly nice hike or camping trip if you encounter them. Poisonous plants are part of the Anacardiaceae family and contain an oily sap called urushiol, which is what causes irritation and rashes when skin brushes up against a bruised or broken piece of leaf or plant stem.

If you spend a lot of time in wooded areas, knowing how to spot poisonous plants so you can steer clear of them, wearing long pants and utilizing bug deterrent sprays can help prevent the itchy bites and rashes. Since the poisonous sap can be transported from clothes to the skin, it’s a good idea to shower and change clothes afterward.

If you happen to get a poisonous plant rash or become infected by itchy mosquito bites, apply FixMySkin 1% Hydrocortisone Healing Body Balm to the affected area up to four times a day. Heat rash and chlorine rash

Heat rash, often called prickly heat, is another common skin ailment during summer. Dr. Daniel Schlessinger explains, “Heat rash happens when sweat glands are blocked, causing sweat to build up under the skin causing tiny, itchy bumps. These bumps can burst and when they do, it feels like a prickly sensation on the skin.”

An easy way to prevent heat rash is to reduce the amount of sweating you do in the outdoors during peak heat. However, if you work outside or need to spend time outdoors for sports or other activities in the summer, this isn’t always feasible. Wearing loose-fitting clothing that wicks away moisture from the skin, like cotton, can help prevent heat rash when you must be outside. Additionally, planning outdoor activities early in the morning or at night when the temperatures come down can help.

Chlorine rash occurs when skin becomes irritated from contact with chlorine, primarily from swimming in overly chlorinated pools or hot tubs. A chlorine rash often looks like a red, hive-like rash that can be itchy, burning or inflamed and can develop sores or blisters, cracks or bleeding. While not everyone will develop a chlorine rash, repeated exposure to the chemical may increase your chances of developing it. Chlorine rash is different from swimmer’s itch, also known as cercarial dermatitis, as that is an allergic reaction to certain microscopic parasites found in bodies of water.

To prevent chlorine rash, limiting time spent in chlorinated water, removing swimsuits and rinsing immediately after swimming can help with prevention. Why do I have white patches on my skin?: What you need to know about vitiligo

The pigment in our skin can change for many reasons. For example, when unprotected skin is exposed to UV rays, the skin produces more melanin as a protective mechanism against further damage, creating what we know as a temporary “tan.” Certain medications and hormonal changes can also affect melanin production and deepen the pigment of the skin. What about white patches on skin? While there are several reasons why white patches on the skin occur, a common one is vitiligo.

“Vitiligo is a non-contagious, chronic auto-immune disease that produces white patches on the skin when melanocytes are attacked and destroyed by your immune system,” says Dr. Joel Schlessinger, board-certified dermatologist, Mohs surgeon and cosmetic surgeon. “While there is no cure for vitiligo, we do have methods of treatment that can help manage the skin condition.”

Skin conditions that cause white patches on the skin

White patches, or depigmentation of the skin, can occur for a multitude of reasons. Dr. Daniel Schlessinger, board-certified dermatologist as well as Mohs surgeon and cosmetic surgeon explains, “When skin loses pigment and turns lighter than normal, it’s essential to consult with a board-certified dermatologist to pinpoint the cause. While there are numerous causes, some common causes of light patches of skin are a fungal infection called tinea versicolor, prior inflammation causing light skin, or from vitiligo, which affects people of all skin tones, genders and ages.”

Vitiligo, which is diagnosed in about 2% of the world’s population, appears as milky-white patches on the skin and while they typically occur on the face, hands, feet and arms, they can present anywhere on the body. Nonsegmental vitiligo is the most common type where white patches appear symmetrically on the body, for example, if they appear on the left side of the body, they most likely appear on the right side as well. Segmental vitiligo is less common and will only affect one area or one side of the body.

Vitiligo can also cause hair to turn white in some areas and can affect the mucous membranes inside the mouth and nose, as well as the inner ears and eyes. Dermatologists use a special black light called a Wood’s lamp to inspect any white spots and help clinically diagnose vitiligo. In some cases, blood tests or biopsies may be required for diagnosis or to rule out other conditions.

The causes and risk factors of vitiligo

While research is ongoing, vitiligo is thought to be a multifactorial skin condition with contributions from multiple genetic risk factors and environmental factors contributing to its onset. Additionally, about 15-25% of people with vitiligo are also affected by at least one other auto-immune disease, including alopecia areata, hypothyroidism, Type 1 diabetes and others.

While more research is needed, vitiligo may be triggered by sun exposure, elevated stress levels and exposure to certain chemicals. Interestingly, injuries to the skin like cuts, rubbing, scratching, or very severe sunburns can also trigger vitiligo in genetically predisposed people, something known as Koebner’s phenomenon.

Vitiligo prevention and treatment options

No treatment will prevent or cure vitiligo, but there are options for anyone who wants to manage or keep it under control as best they can. Dr. Schlessinger says, “For some patients not experiencing any symptoms that cause discomfort, treatment for vitiligo may not be necessary. However, certain treatment options can be helpful for those who simply don’t like the cosmetic appearance of these changes in their skin pigment. We were proud to be a part of trials on JAK inhibitors that have been proven to significantly improve vitiligo across a wide population of patients. They do have side-effects and are quite costly, so they are not for everyone, though.”

As with most skin conditions, practicing proper sun safety, like wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day of the year, is key to keeping vitiligo from flaring further. Seek shade during peak hours and wear protective clothing and a hat whenever you can. Additionally, never try to “tan” your skin in hopes of regaining pigment, instead, you can try camouflage makeup to even your skin tone like Dermablend Professional Cover Crème SPF 30, which comes in a wide range of shades and includes 3% titanium dioxide for supplemental sun protection.

However, you should always undergo a corticosteroid regimen under the care of a board-certified dermatologist. If topical corticosteroids have proven ineffective against vitiligo, a topical calcineurin inhibitor may be prescribed, which is also suitable for vitiligo occurring on sensitive areas like the eyelids or lips.

Certain Janus Kinase Inhibitors (JAK) are a promising treatment for the management of vitiligo, as they have been shown to help skin on the face and body to regain some pigment. Opzelura (ruxolitinib) cream, which was originally prescribed as an eczema treatment, is the first FDA-approved cream to treat nonsegmental vitiligo, and works by blocking signaling pathways in the body that are responsible for the immune response associated with vitiligo.

Narrowband-ultraviolet B phototherapy has also been shown to be a somewhat effective treatment option for enduring re-pigmentation of skin. One systematic review of research on phototherapy for vitiligo showed the best results for re-pigmentation occurring on the face and neck. “We have this modality in our clinic, but with JAK inhibitors available now, we won’t generally be using this unless there is a very small area of vitiligo present,” says Dr. Schlessinger.

“ For patients who are experiencing vitiligo and loss of pigment over a majority of your body, there is an option for complete depigmentation of the skin, but it is only for the worst of cases and generally is NOT something I recommend,” says, Dr. Schlessinger. Monobenzone is an FDA-approved medication that removes all pigment from the skin, but this is an option that should be thoroughly discussed with a board-certified dermatologist for consideration as it is permanent and irreversible.
